HIV cure: Researchers reveal that HIV can be permanently cured by attacking clonally-expanded HIV-infected cells

HIV researchers have made an interesting discovery. Their discovery can prove instrumental in redirecting HIV curative strategies towards hidden HIV reservoirs. However, there is a problem. According to the researchers, clonally-expanded HIV-infected cells may still persist and even produce new virus in patients on combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) over many years.

Therefore, a HIV cure can only be found when these cells are attacked and destroyed. Only then will there will a permanent HIV cure. The new study has been published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

Although significant medical research has resulted in the transformation of HIV/AIDS from being a terminal disease to being a manageable condition, the stubbornness and the persistence of HIV infection is a major concern. Modern antiretroviral drugs, though efficient in keeping the HIV levels undetectable in blood, cannot cure the infection permanently.

The failure to adhere to a strict cART regimen results in the recurrence of detectable HIV. One of the reasons for this is the latent virus’ ability to persist in cells and later re-emerging in response to imperfectly-understood stimuli, reports MedicalXpress.

The study has been able to establish the fact for the first time that infectious HIV-1 reservoirs persist in the CD4+ T cells that are clonally-expanded, which is a population of numerous cells produced by a single cell. These T cell clones possess active virus that expands when a patient neglects cART. This is probably what happened to “Two and a Half Men” actor Charlie Sheen when he stopped taking his HIV medication and went for an alternative HIV cure.

“This result shows that cells containing replication-competent HIV-1 proviruses can clonally expand and persist in vivo, presenting a challenge for achieving a cure of HIV infection,” the researchers wrote.

The researchers are looking at the findings as extremely important to devising HIV cure strategies in future and the finding will help in developing successful curative strategies. However, they also pointed out the fact that better understanding of the fraction of the replication-competent reservoir is needed and how to specifically target and eliminate them.

The Centre of Awareness has disclosed that it has found a potential cure for HIV/AIDS following ten years of research into plant medicines in Ghana.

According to the founder of the centre, Dr Samuel Ato Duncan, the drug named COA has been scientifically tested and seen to be efficacious and safe for the treatment of HIV/AIDS.

Dr Duncan disclosed this at a presentation on the drug at the Physicians and Surgeons auditorium in Accra on Wednesday, 5 October 2016.

HIV is believed to have originated in west-central Africa during the late 19th or early 20th century. AIDS was first recognised by the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1981 and its cause – HIV infection – was identified in the early part of that decade.

Between its discovery and 2014, AIDS has caused an estimated 39 million deaths worldwide.

HIV is spread primarily through unprotected sex (including anal and oral sex), contaminated blood transfusions, hypodermic needles, and from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding.

There is no cure or vaccine for the disease, however, anti-retroviral treatment can slow the course of the disease and may lead to a near-normal life expectancy.

The Ato Duncan’s announcement of a potential cure comes two days after The Telegraph reported that a British man could become the first person in the world to be cured of the disease using a new therapy designed by a team of scientists from five UK universities.

The 44-year-old, according to the paper, is one of 50 people currently trialling a treatment which targets the disease even in its dormant state.

Scientists told The Sunday Times that presently the virus is completely undetectable in the man’s blood, although that could be a result of regular drugs. However if the dormant cells are also cleared out it could represent the first complete cure. Trial results are expected to be published in 2018.

“This is one of the first serious attempts at a full cure for HIV,” said Mark Samuels, managing director of the National Institute for Health Research Office for Clinical Research Infrastructure.

“We are exploring the real possibility of curing HIV. This is a huge challenge and it’s still early days but the progress has been remarkable.”

The trial is being undertaken by researchers from the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, University College London and King’s College London.

HIV is so difficult to treat because it targets the immune system, splicing itself into the DNA of T-cells so that they not only ignore the disease, but turn into viral factories which reproduce the virus.

Current treatments, called anti-retroviral therapies (Art), target that process but they cannot spot dormant infected T-cells.

The new therapy works in two stages. Firstly, a vaccine helps the body recognise the HIV-infected cells so it can clear them out. Secondly, a new drug called Vorinostat activates the dormant T-cells so they can be spotted by the immune system.

More than 100,000 people in Britain are living with HIV, around 17 per cent of whom do not know they have the disease, and 37 million are infected worldwide.

Professor Sarah Fidler, a consultant physician at Imperial College London, added: “This therapy is specifically designed to clear the body of all HIV viruses, including dormant ones.

“It has worked in the laboratory and there is good evidence it will work in humans too, but we must stress we are still a long way from any actual therapy.

“We will continue with medical tests for the next five years and at the moment we are not recommending stopping Art but in the future depending on the test results we may explore this.”

Only one person has ever been cured of HIV. He is Timothy Brown, also known as The ‘second’ Berlin Patient, who received a stem cell transplant from a patient with natural immunity to HIV in 2008.

Ian Green, chief executive of the Terrence Higgins Trust, the Aids charity, said: “There is still no cure for HIV and we welcome this ambitious study which looks to eradicate the virus completely from the bodies of people living with HIV, instead of suppressing it.”

Philip Christopher Baldwin, an HIV awareness activist said: “I’m really excited by the recent developments regarding a potential cure for the HIV virus.

“The first person to complete an experimental course of treatment has cleared the virus. I was diagnosed with HIV in 2010, when I was 24 years old. It took me a number of years to come to terms with my HIV.

“I am proud that five British universities have been responsible for this pioneering research. It remains to be seen whether the virus will return in the “cured” patient, or if the other people taking part in the medical trial will respond in a similar way.

“The research, though, is great progress and I hope that these early results will be repeated throughout the trial group. This is an important step towards a world free of the fear of HIV.”

4 Ways To Prevent Early Morning Heart Attack New research hopes to stop this ticking time bomb

heart-attackIf you have heart disease or are at risk for it, brace yourself. The peak hours for sudden cardiac death (SCD)—where the heart’s electrical system short circuits due to a rhythm abnormality, stopping the flow of blood to the brain, heart and the rest of the body, causing the person to collapse and die almost instantly—occur between 6 AM and 10 AM.

For more than 30 years health experts have known the erratic heartbeat responsible for SCD strikes most often during these early morning hours. SCD caused by this electrical instability causes an estimated 325,000 deaths annually. And consider who is at risk—those with known heart disease; a family history of heart disease or SCD; prior cardiac arrest or heart attack; high blood screen-shot-2015-09-04-at-12-36-30-pmpressure/hypertension; abnormal heart rhythms; congestive heart failure; abnormalities on an EKG test or other diagnosed heart muscle weakness; diabetes; smoking; and recreational drug use. Because the biological clock is disrupted, shift workers may also be at a higher risk. And African Americans are at nearly twice the risk as whites for SCD, they also fare worse in surviving such an episode.

The Missing Link Found

Until now, though, researchers have only had theories as to why dawn could trigger SCD, also known as cardiac arrest, and no good ways to prevent it. But a recently discovered molecular link between a protein known as KLF15 and the body’s natural circadian rhythm could help researchers develop drugs and therapies to help those at risk to wake up without worry.

Normally, KLF15 levels increase upon waking. Experimental studies in laboratory mice where the KLF15 level in their hearts was suppressed had an increased susceptibility to sudden death. Ongoing research has also found that patients with heart disease have lower levels of the protein.

“What it suggests is that if perhaps one could boost the levels of this protein in the heart at the right time, like in the early morning hours, that could be helpful,” says Mukesh Jain, MD, director of the Case Cardiovascular Research Institute at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and the researcher responsible for finding the KLF15 link. The research was presented at the meeting of the American Chemical Society this week.

More from Prevention: 7 Signs You’re Having a Heart Attack

Stopping SCD

There’s currently no blood test or other mechanism to detect KLF15 levels in patients at risk. “Before we learned about KLF15, we didn’t know what to look for. So at least now we have a target to try to develop a test for,” says Dr. Jain. Until screening tests and therapies to prevent SCD become a reality, Dr. Jain offers these suggestions:

Know the symptoms: For both men and women, lightheadedness is the most common symptom that cardiac arrest might occur. Other symptoms may include chest pressure and shortness of breath. If you experience any of these symptoms, sit down immediately. “If it goes on too long, you may pass out,” Dr. Jain explains.

SCD can occur on its own, or the disruption to the heart’s electrical system can be triggered by a heart attack, which is a blockage in the heart’s blood supply that damages or weakens the heart muscle. SCD is the number one cause of death in heart attacks.

Unlike a heart attack where the victim remains awake while experiencing warning signs, cardiac arrest is often so abrupt, the victim collapses and is, in essence, clinically dead before intervention occurs.

Don’t hesitate: Because the heart’s electrical system is involved CPR alone won’t revive the victim. A defibrillator is needed to restart the heart for any chance of survival.

“Time is of the essence when it comes to sudden cardiac death,” says Dr. Jain. Approximately 95% of those who experience SCD die from it, according to the Heart Rhythm Society, which offers an online risk assessment tool.

If you wake up feeling lightheaded, let someone know and call 911 immediately. “There isn’t a whole lot you can do or anyone in your family can do to help you,” says Dr. Jain. “This recognition of needing urgent defibrillation is why we have defibrillators on airplanes and other public spaces.”

Get a good night’s sleep: Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep, says Dr. Jain. Studies have shown that inadequate sleep may raise your risk of cardiovascular disease. If you have disrupted sleep, Jain suggests being screened for sleep apnea, a common, chronic disorder marked by numerous pauses in breathing while you sleep, often accompanied with loud snoring or choking sounds. An estimated 18 million Americans have sleep apnea, but most remain undiagnosed. Obesity is the number one risk factor for developing sleep apnea.

“If you do have disrupted sleep, it does increase your risk for arrhythmias,” says Dr. Jain. “There are ways to treat sleep apnea which would one, give you a more restful sleep and two, decrease your risk of electrical abnormalities of the heart, one of which is sudden cardiac death.”

Consider delaying your morning workout: If you have a flexible schedule, Dr. Jain says a case can be made for working out later in the day.But don’t give up your morning trip to the gym if that’s the only time you can do it. Just start off slowly, and build up.

“It’s still better to participate in exercise, even if it’s in the morning than not doing it at all because the beneficial effects far outweigh any risk an individual person might be subject to in the early morning hours,” says Dr. Jain.

If you currently have heart disease and are on medication for it, Dr. Jain suggests taking those prior to doing any morning exercise.

12 Unexpected Benefits of Beer That Give You Good Reasons To Drink It

A cold lager is refreshing on a summer afternoon, while a hearty porter or stout will warm you up faster than cuddling by a fire on winter’s coldest nights. But beer, a crowd pleaser for all tastes and all seasons, also brings unexpected benefits.

While there are many health benefits of beer, who among us hasn’t rounded down when doctors or nutritionists ask how much we imbibe? The health-conscious avoid the malty beverage due to the high calorie content. Calorie counts range from approximately 100 calories in light beers, while an Olde English High Gravity malt-style beer weighs in at 220 calories per serving. A couple of those a day will quickly lead to a beer belly, but don’t take a vow of sobriety just yet! Here are 10 nutritious reasons to raise a glass or bottle to your good health:

1. Portion control

Beer is conveniently packaged in a portion-control bottle. It’s easy to limit it to one—or at least keep track of how many you’ve had.

2. It’s rich in B vitamins

Beer is full of B vitamins from the yeast. Unfiltered beer is especially high in B3, B6 and folic acid (B9). B3 aids in cell repair and B6 eases PMS. Folic acid aids in colon cancer prevention.

3. It’s high in fiber

Beer contains fiber, which acts as a natural laxative. It also slows the rate at which food leaves your stomach, which means it suppresses appetite. So indulge in a beer, and know you’re preventing overeating.

4. Stress reduction

A beer a day keeps stress and heart attacks away. Moderate alcohol consumption can reduce stress and anxiety, known contributors of heart disease. According to the Mayo Clinic, alcohol reduces risk of dying of a heart attack and possibly reduces risk of strokes. “Moderate” is defined as up to 12 ounces per day for women and 24 ounces per day for men. Drink to that.

5. Beer drinkers are at lower risk of type-2 diabetes

Multiple studies have shown that beer drinkers had an approximately 30 percent lower risk of type-2 diabetes than test subjects who abstained.

6. Beer drinkers have a lower risk of developing gallstones

Beer drinking is associated with a reduced risk for gallstones, according to the Mayo Clinic. Gallstones are made up of cholesterol, bile and other things that cause pain in the stomach. No one wants to deal with that.

7. It has anti-microbial properties

Hops, the bitter flowers used in brewing, are known to be antimicrobial, which could fight disease.

8. It’s good for your muscles

Muscles benefit from a substance in hops that keeps muscle from deteriorating.

9. It’s high in silicon

Two brewskis a day could help prevent Alzheimer’s disease, according to a 2007 study at the University of Alcala in Spain. The research suggests a high intake of silicon limits aluminum absorption in the brain, which in turn could aid in the prevention of Alzheimer’s.

10. Moderate beer consumption is good for bone density

Beer could keep bones strong. Researchers at Tufts University found a positive link between beer or wine consumption and hip-bone density. Heavy drinking, however, led to bone loss, according to the same study, so be conservative.

11. It can reduce the risk of heart disease

Red wine is often touted as the healthiest alcohol choice, but a Kaiser Permanente study says not so fast. Incidences of heart disease for beer drinkers were lower than for wine or whiskey drinkers.

12. It’s a social lubricant

A brew also has social benefits. A beer can loosen you up a bit for a first date, a family gathering or a networking event. Alcohol can boost courage and chattiness, according to a University of Washington study. However, some people continue to drink because of the perceived expectation that if one is good, a lot is even better. We all know more beer doesn’t make us more charming and attractive. Everyone knows how that story ends.

So, take that teetotalers! Ales and lagers are actually good for you (in moderation). Cheers!

Why Relationships Fail

After more than twenty-five years in divorce recovery ministry, I’ve watched more marriages disintegrate than I can count. Why do these relationships fail?

Listening to people who are getting divorced has helped me uncover some root causes. These aren’t as obvious as an empty checkbook or separate bedrooms. I’m referring to what lurks beneath the tension and fighting — the issues hiding under the stuff we address in church, such as love types, financial stress, gender differences, communication skills, respect, and intimacy.

Because couples “don’t know what they don’t know,” they rarely detect the relational explosives that detonate and destroy a marriage that could have been saved.

The unique insight I’ve gleaned after years working with those divorcing propels me to help expose the hidden booby traps that often go undetected until the relationship dies.

Here are 8 myths about falling in love, getting married, and maintaining a relationship that can destroy a marriage.

Myth #1: Leniency is an act of love

Does God have any problem allowing us to suffer a consequence when we make an unwise or sinful choice? NO. Disagree? Look up Adam and Eve, King David, and Ananias/Sapphira.)

Then where did we get the crazy notion that loving our spouse means tolerating, ignoring, or making excuses for his or her harmful, sinful choices? We certainly didn’t learn that perversion from God — the Creator of Love.

He explains it clearly, “Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word” (Psalm 119:67, NIV).

Suffering, not leniency, was the action that brought the Psalmist to his senses. True love allows a spouse to suffer a consequence when he or she repeatedly chooses an unwise, destructive pattern. The loving response is not done in disrespect or anger but rather with compassion: I love you too much to let you keep doing this without a consequence. Harsh reality often provides the catalyst necessary for the spouse to come to his or her senses, make changes, and thrive.

Myth #2: I can change my spouse

I’m so grateful God is patient. It took the Holy Spirit time and consistent nudging before I finally realized I was spitting in God’s face when I attempted to change or “fix” someone else — including my spouse. God packed my husband’s personality luggage in the way he knew was best. I needed to stop trying to change him into what I think he should be like — ME!
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart” (Jeremiah 1:5,NLT).

Myth #3: I’m entitled to be happy

As much as I love my country, being born in the U.S. today comes with one significant pitfall. The land of the “free and the brave” has morphed into the land of “I deserve to have and do whatever I want.” As a nation, we spend a lot of time focusing on our “rights” rather than on our responsibilities. And this same kind of self-glorifying attitude is killing marriages.

If ever there was a person who had the right to claim his rights, it was King Jesus! Even his trial was illegal. However, this is not his focus. He teaches to focus on responsibility rather than rights. Loyalty lifts our head and fills us with self-respect, character, and dignity. This is the foundation that builds a healthy marriage and family.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3, NIV).

Myth #4: My previous emotional wounds are in the past. They have no effect on my marriage

Both the sins done to you and the sins done by you affect your marriage. Past destructive choices embed within you shame, fear, and self-loathing. That’s why God hates sin; it shackles us to lies and darkness. And unless we confront those tormentors and the ways they’ve perverted our thinking and actions, they fester.

We cannot heal and restore what we refuse to acknowledge. Jesus forgives all sin and teaches us how to forgive others. The first step toward restoration is speaking truth and surrender.

“My father and mother walked out and left me, but GOD took me in” (Psalm 27:10, MSG).

Myth #5: Pornography will not harm my marriage

If I plopped a few drops of bleach into your morning coffee, would you drink it? I think not. That’s how pornography affects the precious sweetness of a husband and wife’s sexual union. It’s toxic and deadly.

Get more — Free! e-book — Les & Leslie Parrott’s, The Good Fight

Pornography is adultery. Period.

“My wounds fester and stink because of my foolish sins” (Psalm 38:5, NLT).

Myth #6: It’s my spouse’s job to meet my needs

When we expect a human to meet needs only God can fill, we are headed for disappointment and trouble. It is neither feasible nor wise to expect a spouse to meet all our needs.

God is the only one up for the task. He intentionally created us to seek our significance and purpose through him alone. He is our source.

“For in him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28a, NIV).

Myth #7: Keeping secrets from my spouse will not harm my marriage

Can your spouse look at your phone, computer, DVDs, gas mileage, receipts, credit card bill, closet, calendar, or hiding spot at any time? If the answer is no, the immediate question is, “Why not?” If the answer is because he/she is a manipulative bully and dictates your every move, then you have a different problem. But if it’s because you don’t want to be held accountable, that’s deception.

And lies destroy relationships.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full (John 10:10, NIV).

Myth #8: Divorce does not happen to good Christians

I cringe when I hear a sermon where the pastor/speaker states that the way to keep a marriage alive is by “removing the word divorce from your vocabulary.” Why? I have proof it’s untrue.

I removed the word divorce from my vocabulary, but my former husband did not. I ended up ambushed by divorce.

The implication is a marriage will stay intact if a spouse decides to keep his or her vow. That’s incorrect because marriage involves two people. And it takes two people to get married, but only one person to divorce.

The phrase sets us up for failure because it implies that you can control the actions and decisions of your spouse. I hate divorce and desperately wanted my marriage to succeed. And yet it didn’t.

Church attendance, Bible reading, salvation, prayer, and reciting “I’ll never get divorced” do not automatically inoculate a spouse from divorce. Almost every person I’ve ministered to in divorce recovery said to me, “I can’t believe it. How did this happen? I never dreamed I’d be divorced.”

Church attendance, Bible reading, salvation, prayer, and reciting ‘I’ll never get divorced’ do not automatically inoculate a spouse from divorce.

A wise Christian continually works on strengthening his/her marriage, allows accountability, and discovers areas of weakness. He/she fervently prays, learns, reads and grows as a spouse — all the while understanding, “The desire of my heart is to please God and be a steadfast, respectful, compassionate, and loving mate. I pray my spouse will do the same. God is in charge of controlling those things in my spouse. I can’t control the actions of another person.”

“Foolish dreamers live in a world of illusion; wise realists plant their feet on the ground” (Proverbs 14:18, MSG).

The reality is that marriage is not nearly as much about finding the right person as it is becoming the right person.

Risky Tomato (10 Major side effects)

The major element found in fresh raw tomato is the carotenoid pigment ‘lycopene’. It is a chemical compound that is supposed to keep cancer at bay. But excessive intake of this phytochemical can interfere with the regular activities of our immune system and slow it down. As a result, our body loses its ability to protect itself from several common microbial (bacterial, fungal and viral) diseases. At the same time it also becomes incapable of repairing the existing physical damages.

The tomato is full of acids. So, the excessive consumption of tomato triggers various gastrointestinal disorders. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), commonly known as ‘acid reflux’, is a common intestinal disorder. This disease raises the digestive acid level in our stomach, which starts seeping out. Gradually, the acids reach the wall of our esophagus and cause a burning sensation in it. The acids from tomatoes can make this condition worse and can even give you heartburn. So, if you have already been diagnosed with GERD or other such digestive issues, limit your intake of tomatoes immediately.

  1. Irritable Bowel Disorder:

The lycopene content of tomato can result in some serious intestinal problems, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It is characterized by acute pain and extreme discomfort in abdomen along with changed bowel habits. Apart from these, you can also experience some other minor to moderate intestinal issues like abdominal gas, indigestion, bloating, etc., if you consume as much as 30 mg of lycopene a day. It may even give rise to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.

  1. Kidney Stones:

Tomatoes, especially the seeds of the vegetable, are rich in calcium and oxalate compounds. If you are already suffering from minor kidney problems, it will be really tough for your body to digest these elements. In such a case, consuming large amounts of tomato will be harmful for you as the calcium and oxalates will accumulate in your kidneys and form small to large stones.

5. Worsened Diverticulitis:

Diverticulitis is a medical condition in which the inner surface layer of the large intestine protrudes through the external muscular layer and these ‘diverticula’ or small pouches get inflamed due to infections. According to scientists, tomato seeds, being small, can get stuck in these out-pouchings and aggravate the condition.

6. Deteriorated Prostate Cancer:

Studies have shown that the lycopene present in the seeds of the vegetable can cause abnormalities in the male prostate gland. Affecting the reproductive system, this abnormality causes severe pain, erectile dysfunction, difficulty in urination, etc. It may sometimes lead to prostate cancer.

7. Vitamin Overdose:

Tomato is a vitamin-rich vegetable. Consuming a medium-sized tomato provides 1,025 IU of Vitamin A and 17 mg of Vitamin C, which are half and one-tenth of our daily requirements, respectively.Side effects of eating too many tomatoes in a day can lead to vitamin overdose in our body. It may eventually lead to problems like headache, nausea, kidney pain, etc.

8. Nutrient Deficiency:

While getting lots of vitamins from tomatoes, you may end up depriving yourself of many other essential nutrients. It damages our your body as you become unable to carry out your vital physical activities efficiently.

9. Allergic Reactions:

Excessive lycopene can give us allergic reactions too. Some of the symptoms of lycopene allergy include itching, rashes, hives, chest constriction, swollen lips, burning sensation in eyes, and so on.

10. Change In Skin Color:

Prolonged and consistent consumption of tomato can alter your skin color. It might take on a slight orange tint!

I am sure that no amounts of side effects will keep you away from your favorite tomato! But, try to keep these side effects in mind and limit your tomato consumption!
